A raging wildfire at the Varibobi township, mostly burning forested land on the foothills of Mt. Parnitha, just north of Athens, blackened the skies in Attica prefecture on Tuesday and continued to threaten the power supply of the entire region, as high-voltage lines crisscross the specific site.
The situation was made even more serious due to a scorching heatwave in the country and a resultant surge in electricity demand to run air conditioning units at maximum output.
A video shown by the Athens-based Mega television network on Tuesday afternoon shows the flames surrounding a residence.
Evacuations were ordered from Varibobi, the Adames settlement, the Thracomakedones municipality on the slope of Mt. Parnitha and the Olympic Village housing complex.
