Seven major wildfires raged across Greece on Tuesday afternoon and heading into the evening – an ominous development coinciding with the worst heat wave in the country since 1987.

The most prominent wildfire was just a little more than a half hour’s drive from downtown Athens, as the Varibobi site. Nevertheless, major fires were reported on the Dodecanese holiday islands of Kos and Rhodes, northern Evia island, near Irakleio, Crete, extreme southeastern Greece in the Mani region, and in extreme southwestern Messinia prefecture.

Several settlements northwest of Athens proper and below Mt. Parnitha were ordered evacuated on Tuesday afternoon.
