The professor of Pathology – Infectious Diseases of the University of Patras and member of the Committee of Scientists of the Ministry of Health, Charalambos Gogos, spoke about the spread of the coronavirus in schools. In fact, he answered the question whether there is a possibility of horizontal closure.
As Mr. Gogos pointed out to SKAI TV, the fear for the spread of the virus in schools is real, however, in his estimation, an outbreak may not be observed.
On the other hand, he described the set of measures on the basis of which the schools operate as difficult, but promising, and in any case, as he said, if there is a problem, it will be re-evaluated. We will reevaluate the issue again in a month,” he added.
Gogos: Does not see horizontal closure in schools
In fact, Charalambos Gogos claimed that we are not expected to see horizontal closures in schools. According to him, taking into account the vaccination coverage, which prevents the pressure on the NHS and the fact that children are usually slightly ill, will facilitate the closure of individual departments and not schools. “It is very important for society that schools function. In case of a large increase in infections, everything is possible, but it is something we do not expect,” he added.
He also focused on the benefits of increased testing and its contribution to controlling a potential spread: “Children can get infected outside of school. If they become infected, they will be diagnosed, traced and then isolated.”
Regarding the intensification of vaccinations at a young age, the professor noted that the information on this issue should continue and that pediatricians should participate in it, while, as he said, he is constantly called by parents who have concerns and insecurities.
