Former Greek prime minister George Papandreou on Wednesday afternoon reportedly announced his intention to vie for the helm of the KI.NAL political formation, in a telephone conversation with its outgoing president, Fofi Gennimata.

KI.NAL, which stands for Movement for Change, is essentially the successor party to once dominant PASOK, which was founded in September 1974 by Papandreou’s father, three-time premier Andreas Papandreou.

George Papandreou and PASOK rode to a landslide election victory in October 2009. However, he resigned from prime minister in roughly two years and stepped down from the party leadership after being overwhelmed by the first phase of the Greek fiscal and economic meltdown that bedeviled much of his time in power.
