The Greek government on Friday, as previously announced, requisitioned another batch of private sector physicians in northern Greece – pulmonologists, pathologists and anesthesiologists – for duty in the public health sector for a one-month period, beginning on Jan. 12.

The requisition order requires selected specialists to report to a specific hospital or other health facility named in the former.

Each of the requisitioned physicians will be required to work, under the current payscale, at the cited facility for 15 days within the one-month period.

Meanwhile, the Mitsotakis government also announced that an additional 800 hospital beds for Covid-19 will be established in the greater Athens area, where roughly half of the country’s population of 11 million resides.

The relevant health minister on Friday added that a surge in the spread of the Omicron variant is putting pressure on the public healthcare system, in relation to regular hospital beds but not ICUs.
