“Fortunately I’m alive” were the first words of the man found today at the stern of the ship, Euroferry Olympia, which has been on fire since the early hours of Thursday.
The Belarusian survivor is expected to give important information to the rescuers, while according to SKAI he has already described to them the way he was saved:
“I was on the bottom deck and so I was saved. I did not see him alive anymore, I just heard voices “.
It is noted that at this moment a port ship is approaching the ship.
It is noted that the survivor who was found today at the stern of the Euroferry Olympia can be seen in the photo coming down from the stairs of the ship, where the officers and rescuers are waiting for him to provide first aid.
The man has been trapped since the early hours of Thursday at the stern of the ship, while the port and rescuers are making efforts to find the other missing.
The news was also confirmed by the Minister of Shipping, Giannis Plakiotakis on the television station.
“One of the passengers, most likely of Lithuanian origin, was found alive and we are waiting for identification,” he said. The passenger is expected to provide information for the other missing.
High thermal load and dangerous gases on the ship
Earlier, the head of the EMAK team operating at the spot spoke to SKAI channel, saying that there is a high thermal load but also many dangerous gases that make the ship inaccessible.
“When we get close, apart from the high temperature, the smell from the gas emissions is unbearable.”
He stressed that the problem his team is facing at the moment is the time spent on the ship. “We can not stay more than 10-15 minutes. “If the thermal load falls and the toxicity of the gases is reduced, we will be able to approach, to make openings”, he underscored.
It is characteristic that according to experts, the temperature inside the ship now reaches 2,000 degrees! Which unfortunately greatly reduces the chances of the missing being found alive.
It is recalled that the day before yesterday, EMAK members managed to rescue two other people from the burning ship, a Bulgarian and a man of Afghan origin.
The ship was carrying 239 passengers and 51 crew members. Until the last rescue, 12 people were missing today, including three Greeks. There are now 11 missing.
Yesterday, its towing started towards a safe anchorage, in the north of Corfu, northeast of Kassiopi bay.
