The signing of a CETA agreement between the European Union and Canada has generated a fillip for Greek exports of iconic feta cheese, a designation of origin-protected product, to the massive North American country’s market.
Greek feta exports
Based on official data released by the Greek consulate in Toronto, the value of Greek feta exports increased by a sizeable 117 percent between 2017 and 2021, reaching 5.8 million euros in absolute terms last year.
Nevertheless, the report still noted that three out of 10 kilos of cheese claimed to be feta, imported annually to Canada, is not actually Greek feta. Only the specific cheese exported from Greece, produced with goat milk, is protected with the international designation.
