New businesses registered with the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) were triple the number of closures in 2022, figures announced on Wednesday revealed.

According to chamber president Sofia Kounenaki-Efremoglou, the auspicious development came despite challenges created by an ongoing energy crisis, surging inflation and rising interest rates, and confirmed, as she said, that 2022 was a good year for the Greek economy and entrepreneurship in the country.

Kounenaki-Efremoglou said an even more encouraging fact was that new societe anonyme (public companies) increased to 771 in 2022, up from 589 in 2021.

According to the chamber, new businesses opened reached 7,397, while closures were 2,403 in 2022; 6,759 and 2,071, respectively, in 2021.
