
The Hellenic Statistical Authority announces that in January 2023, 21,129 road motor cars (both new and used from abroad) were put into circulation for the first time, recording a 50.4% increase compared with the corresponding month of 2022 when the number of road motor cars was 14,044. In January 2022, a 12.1% decrease had been observed in comparison with the corresponding month of 2021. A total number of 11,638 new cars were put into circulation in January 2023 compared with 6,057 in January 2022, recording a 92.1% increase.
The new motorcycles over 50cc (both new and used from abroad) that were put into circulation for the first time in January 2023 amounted to 4,187, against 2,331 in 2022, thus recording a 79.6% increase. In January 2022, a 19.1% increase had been observed in comparison with the corresponding month of 2021 (Table 1, Graph 4). Out of the above motorcycles 3,864 were new, while the corresponding figure in January 2022 was 2,092, recording an 84.7% increase.
Brands
In terms of sales by car brand, Opel holds the lion’s share, with 13.2% and 1,390 new cars. It is followed by Toyota with a percentage of 11.1% and Hyundai with 10.3%.

The value of the Greek market
The value of the domestic new car market in 2022 is estimated to have shown an increase of 6.0% compared to 2021, approaching the levels of 2019, according to the industry study “Car import businesses”, prepared by STOCHASIS Business Consultants SA .
According to the same study, in the medium term (2023-2025) the market in question in unit sales will show an average annual rate of change of 7.4%, while in the long term it is predicted that it will be rise to the levels of 2009.
