The role of Greece as a pillar of stability, peace and security in the region, as a provider of energy security, but also as a reliable partner and ally in the new geopolitical landscape shaped by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, is expected to be highlighted by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during today’s contacts at the 59th Munich Security Conference, according to government sources cited by state news agency AMNA.
Specifically, during his participation in the 59th Munich Security Conference, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will have a meeting with a 17-member cross-party delegation of the American Congress (16 Senators and one Congressman) led by Senator Lindsey Graham. In attendance at the meeting are expected to be, among others, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert (Bob) Menendez and Senator Chris Van Hollen, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Just 24 hours before the arrival of the American Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in Athens – with whom the Prime Minister will have a meeting on Monday evening, shortly before the fourth round of the Greece-US Strategic Dialogue opens on Tuesday – the meeting on German soil is expected to confirm the excellent level of Greek-American relations and the bipartisan recognition that exists in the American Congress for the strategic importance of Greece.
On immigration
Besides, Mr. Mitsotakis is expected to speak in the afternoon in a debate on Immigration entitled “Rebooting Immigration: Moving towards Opportunities”. On the same discussion panel as Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs will also be present. Ylva Johansson, Tunisian Prime Minister Najla Boudin and Veronica Escobar member of the US House of Representatives.
The prime minister is expected to repeat, according to the same sources, that immigration is a European issue that requires a European solution, as well as that there is a need to support the frontline countries that protect the EU’s borders, a fact that was confirmed at the last European Council. There, as government sources say, basic Greek positions on the need to protect the EU’s external borders were recognized. as well as cooperation with third countries. In addition, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will still have meetings with the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, and the prime minister of Albania, Edi Rama. Later, in the evening, Mr. Mitsotakis will address the Greeks of Germany at an event hosted by the New Democracy party.
