An appellate level judicial council in Brussels on Friday rejected an appeal, filed by Eva Kaili’s attorneys, to free the jailed MEP from pre-trial detention.

The decision means at least another two months in remand for Kaili, who was arrested in early December 2022 in relation to the explosive “Qatargate” investigation of influence-peddling for cash in the European Parliament.

Kaili’s defense team had requested that she be released with an electronic monitoring bracelet.

Meanwhile, Kaili’s partner and the father of her young daughter, achieved his release from jail last week, under the obligation that he wears such a device and not leave the country. Francesco Giorgi stands accused in the same case.

The judicial council also turned down a request for conditional release by Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella, who is also in remand in relation to the Qatargate probe
