The “political earthquake” – as Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the election result – is not only shaking SYRIZA, which suffered a heavy defeat, but is also causing upheavals in the institutional processes. And these are at least temporary. Everything shows that the three days of exploratory contacts for each leader of the three largest parties, according to the provisions of the Constitution, will not be used by any side. Everyone is expected to normally receive the order from the President of the Republic and, barring unforeseen circumstances, will return it the same day.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be the first to receive the phone call from Katerina Sakellaropoulou today, after she receives the final results of the elections from the Speaker of the Parliament. Constantinos Tasoulas is still waiting for the information from acting Minister of the Interior Kalliopi Spanou. These are the first steps to officially open the circle of exploratory contacts. A cycle that will ultimately have, it seems, an extremely short duration.
Exploratory mandates – rounde trip tickets
The information states that Mitsotakis will receive the first order and return it by the end of the day. This will likely be preceded by a round of phone calls to his political opponents to inform them of his intentions. Since yesterday, he has given a clear indication of the movements – express on behalf of the center-right faction. “New Democracy has the approval of the citizens to govern autonomously” was the interpretation that Mitsotakis immediately gave to the result of the simple proportional ballot.
And after talking about “catalytic” data, he meaningfully pointed to speeding up the process for a “definitive governmental solution, so that our country can have an experienced hand at the helm as soon as possible.” The estimates of blue executives are indicative that the interim government could take over even until the end of the week.
Closer to the second polls
In this context and since neither Alexis Tsipras nor Nikos Androulakis are expected to make moves to investigate the possibility of forming a coalition government, the second ballots are getting closer. On June 25, instead of July 2, specifically. As soon as the orders are given and returned to Mitsotakis, Tsipras and Androulakis, the movements of the President of the Republic, the swearing in of the deputies and then the election of the presidium of the Parliament will follow – a Parliament of 48 hours.
Immediately after, the caretaker government takes over and the party staffs start a new election campaign. The meetings under Mitsotakis in the wake of his party’s sweeping victory begin as early as today, with proposals for the content and style of the new election campaign already on the table.
Official sources say that many suggest the need for a repeat of the ND’s election trajectory and for yesterday’s showdown: a wave of tours across the territory, only “positive” speech in the foreground and no toxicity nor “black advertising”, emphasis on its commitments next four-year period for “Greece of 2027”.
