Results of the first opinion poll conducted after Sunday’s general election shows most respondents expecting incumbent New Democracy (ND) party to achieve a majority government after the second ballot, set for June 25.

The poll, conducted by the Kapa Research firm, shows half of respondents reporting that positive reactions from results of Sunday’s election, where ND achieved a landslide victory (40.8 percent) over main rival SYRIZA (20.1 percent).

Conversely, 44 percent of respondents judged the results as negative, while a large plurality said ND’s convincing showing was a result of the opposition’s major deficiencies.

Moreover, 46 percent of respondents said leftist SYRIZA party should immediately commence internal procedures to elect a new leader, whereas 33 percent said the leftist party should again challenge in the upcoming election with former premier Alexis Tsipras at its helm.
