One fatality and two serious injuries were the result of collapsed scaffolding at the Perama ship-repair zone – west of Piraeus – on Monday morning.

According to reports, the 47-year-old operator of a crane was crushed when a one giant metal blade of an under-installation vessel’s propeller fell and collapsed the scaffolding. Another report holds that the scaffolding first collapsed, with the blade then falling on the crane.

The two other workers were transported to local hospitals, and are out of danger.

Unions and political parties issued condemnations in the wake of the industrial accident, among others, demanding heightened inspections by labor inspectors and safety measures.

A 24-hour strike by the ship-repair and metals workers’ union was declared for Tuesday.
