Three members of a Greek humanitarian aid mission being transported to flood-ravaged east Libya were killed in a road accident in the North African country on Sunday, while another two are missing, according to a statement by Greece’s armed forces general office just before midnight.
All three of the victims and the two missing cadres are military personnel.
According to still sketchy reports, a bus carrying members of aid missions from various countries collided head-on with another vehicle travelling in the wrong way. Video subsequently posted to social media ostensibly shows the bus on fire.
Another 15 people were injured, seven of which are in serious condition, according to media reports from within Libya.
The group was being driven from the airport in Benghazi to a collection point for humanitarian aid.
Greece has sent an initial two plane-loads of humanitarian aid for flood-devastated residents of the coastal city of Derna.
