The European Commission on Friday approved a 106-million-euro measure to support completion of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the extreme northeast port city of Alexandroupolis.
This measure aims to complement the Greek public support that was approved by the Commission in June 2021, the latter announced.
Greek authorities notified the Commission of plans to grant additional aid to Gastrade SA, the main party and operator of the new terminal.
The aid will take the form of a direct grant.
In a related development, Greek Environment and Energy Minister Theodoros Skylakakis on Friday announced that the LNG floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) off the coast of Alexandroupolis will soon be fully operational.
The minister spoke at an Economist conference entitled “The Third Thessaloniki Metropolitan Summit”, hosted in the same-name northern Greece city.
Skylakakis first pointed to the all-important LNG terminal on the islet of Revithoussa, off the Piraeus industrial zone in the greater Athens area, while adding that the FSRU in Alexandroupolis will soon be operational, “meaning that we will be able to meet all our needs without using the Russian gas pipeline, and that helps our goals.”
