Births in Greece fell by 10.3 percent in 2022 compared to 2021, 76,541 to 85,346, respectively, according to figures announced on Monday by the country’s statistics authority (EL.STAT). The figure does not include stillborn births.
Conversely, deaths in 2022 totaled 140,801, reduced by 2.2 percent compared with 2021.
Meanwhile, marriages in 2022 totaled 43,355, of which 21,381 were religious services, and 21,974 were civil services. Civil unions (civil partnerships) totaled 13,157, up by 13.9 percent compared to 2021. Of the latter, 394 civil unions were between males; 113 were between females.
Divorces totaled 14,477, up 4 percent compared to 2021, with eight out of 10 divorces – over the past five years – issued by mutual consent.
Interestingly, 65.6 percent of the divorces issues in 2022 dealt with marriages that lasted for more than 10 years (9,500).
