Inflation in Greece climbed to 2.8% in June 2025, according to data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). The harmonized index of consumer prices – used for EU comparisons – increased by 3.6% over the same period.
This marks a slight acceleration compared to May, when annual inflation stood at 2.5%, up from 2% in April.
Looking at the broader trend, the average Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the 12-month period from July 2024 to June 2025 rose by 2.6%, slightly lower than the 2.8% increase recorded in the previous 12-month comparison (July 2023–June 2024 against July 2022–June 2023).
Steep Price Hikes in Rents, Clothing, and Utilities
Rents surged by 11.4% year-on-year, while clothing and footwear saw a 4.9% increase. Food prices continued their upward trend with an overall rise of 2.3%, though some individual categories posted much sharper increases: fresh fish (up 9.7%), fruit (8.1%), and coffee, tea, and cocoa (10.8%).
Electricity costs soared by 23.1%, contributing significantly to the overall inflation figure. However, heating oil prices dropped by 12.9%, and olive oil saw a dramatic decline of 32.9%, helping to offset some of the pressure on household budgets.
Travel and Hospitality Costs on the Rise
Holiday packages are 7.2% more expensive than last year. Dining out – including restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and canteens – saw a 7% increase, while prices at hotels, motels, and inns rose by 6.7%.
Transport Sees Rare Drop
The only major category to record a decline was Transport, which fell by 1.4%. This was mainly due to lower prices for used cars, fuels, and lubricants. However, increases in new car prices, car parts and maintenance, and air travel partially offset the downward trend.
