A new mobile application is giving citizens in Greece the power to report marine pollution in real time, helping authorities respond more swiftly and effectively. The app, now available to the public via the Google Play Store, is part of the broader Interreg IPA ADRION Prevent initiative, in which the South Aegean Regional Development Agency – ENERGEIAKI S.A. plays a key role.
The broader Interreg IPA ADRION Prevent program is focused on addressing marine pollution and aims to tackle the challenge of marine litter, exacerbated by climate change, by developing innovative tools for detection, prevention, and management.
At the heart of the project is a sophisticated digital platform developed by the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications at the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos.” The platform, unveiled during a recent public event, combines citizen participation with cutting-edge technology to combat pollution in coastal and marine environments.
Through the app, users can take photographs of pollution incidents—whether at sea or along the shoreline—and upload them directly. The images are automatically stored in an AI-supported database, allowing for smart categorization, streamlined analysis, and improved incident management.
This combination of mobile accessibility and artificial intelligence empowers everyday users to play an active role in protecting the marine ecosystem, transforming individual observations into actionable environmental data.
