s Greece marks Assumption Day on August 15, thousands of citizens are traveling to the islands, triggering heavy congestion at major ports and on surrounding roads.
The Port of Piraeus, Athens’ main gateway to the islands, is particularly busy. Traffic jams have been reported along Gounari, Alipédou, and other roads near the port. Today alone, 27 ferries are scheduled to depart for the Cyclades, Dodecanese, and Crete, alongside 35 sailings to the Saronic Islands. From Rafina and Lavrio ports, 11 and 9 ferries will depart, respectively.
Passenger numbers are soaring. On August 13, over 24,000 travelers left Piraeus across 25 sailings, while nearly 7,800 used ferries to the Saronic Islands. Rafina and Lavrio reported 6,800 and 2,225 passengers, respectively. Ferry companies have increased sailings to meet demand, while the Hellenic Coast Guard is on high alert to ensure smooth operations and passenger safety.
Highway Safety and Traffic Measures
The Greek Police have implemented enhanced road safety measures for the holiday period. Special patrols, traffic monitoring, and targeted enforcement aim to prevent accidents and manage the increased traffic flow.
Key measures include:
- Sector-based policing of highways according to traffic conditions.
- Increased presence in accident-prone areas and urban entry/exit points.
- Traffic controls at airports, ports, and stations with high passenger density.
- Intensive checks for dangerous driving behaviors, such as speeding, drunk driving, improper overtaking, mobile phone use, and helmet or seatbelt violations.
- Coordination with all relevant authorities to provide timely updates to the public.
Additionally, trucks over 3.5 tons face driving restrictions on national roads during peak holiday hours to reduce congestion. Authorities urge travelers to check vehicle conditions, follow road signs, respect traffic rules, avoid distractions, and use seatbelts and child restraints.
