Afrightening seen in the sky above the Ionian Sea Island of Corfu on Saturday evening as an explosion in one of the engines of a Condor Airways passenger heading for Dusseldorf was recorded by people on the ground.
The images soon went viral over social media.
The loud explosions in the engine of the Condor Boeing 757-300 were accompanied by smoke at an altitude of some 1,500 feet, shortly after the plane’s take-off from the island’s airport just after 8 p.m. local time.
According to reports, pilots followed the protocol and shut down the affected engine, before banking right towards Corfu airport and in a parallel direction with the runway.
Upon further instructions from air traffic controllers, the pilots headed northwest at an altitude of 6,000 to 8,000 feet for the airport in Brindisi, Italy, where the plane landed safely.
