Exports of Greek alcoholic beverages are on a steady upward path, with ouzo and tsipouro leading the way as they gain ground in international markets.
The surge is fueled by tourism, stronger product promotion abroad, and consumers’ growing appetite for authentic tastes. Visitors who try these traditional drinks in Greece often seek them out once back home, boosting sales worldwide.
According to Eurostat data compiled by the Greek Federation of Spirits Producers, exports of Greek spirits in 2024 exceeded €100 million for the second year in a row, largely thanks to ouzo.
Ouzo Remains the Export Leader
Ouzo continues to dominate, accounting for 56% of export value and 69% of exported volume in 2024. Exports rose from €61.1 million in 2023 to €64.3 million in 2024—a 5.2% increase—while quantities grew from 24.8 million kilos to 25.4 million kilos.
Within the European Union, exports held steady with a modest rise of 2.3% in value. Germany remains the largest market, followed by Bulgaria, which has emerged as the second most important EU destination.
Exports to non-EU countries climbed even higher, with value up 11.7% and volume up 12.8%. The strongest performance came from Iraq, where ouzo exports reached €15.1 million (+6%) and 5.8 million kilos (+7%), alongside significant markets such as the United States, Israel, North Macedonia, and Australia.
Tsipouro and Tsikoudia on the Rise
Although still representing a small share—just 2% of export value and 1% of volume—tsipouro and tsikoudia are expanding rapidly. In 2024, tsipouro exports rose 4.4% in value within the EU and a remarkable 25.5% in value to non-EU countries, with quantities up 12.8%.
Over the five-year period from 2020 to 2024, tsipouro exports surged 79% in value and 51.2% in volume, signaling growing recognition internationally. The average export price also improved, up 9% overall, with 11.3% growth in non-EU markets and 6.6% within the EU.
As ouzo solidifies its global standing and tsipouro gains increasing popularity, Greek spirits are carving out a stronger place in international markets, confirming their role as ambassadors of Greek tradition and taste.
