The ruling New Democracy (ND) party maintains a lead over its closest political rival, PASOK, albeit by a lower margin compared to the recent European election, according to a survey carried out by pollsters Interview on behalf of the politics.gr news site.
The conservative party recorded a notable 4.5% drop in the voters’ support in comparison to Interview’s previous poll in June, while in the latest survey, ND received 25.9% in the projected result, followed by centrist PASOK at 14.8%.
The right-wing party Greek Solution (Elliniki Lysi) appears to have made substantial gains, standing at 10.1%, with the left-wing Freedom Course (Plefsi Eletherias) close behind at 10%. The Greek Communist Party comes in fourth with 7.8%, followed by Democracy Movement (Kinima Dimokratias) at 5.3%.
ND remains first in voting intention with 21.4%, while PASOK posted 12.2%, followed by Greek Solution (8.4%), Freedom Course (8.3%), and the communist party (KKE) at 6.5%.
On the question of “who is more suitable to be the Prime Minister,” 31% chose incumbent PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with former SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras garnering 26% of preferences, with the majority (43%) picking no one. The latter response was also the most popular (30.9%) to the question of which politician you trusted more to lead the country. Mitsotakis followed with 26.5%, way ahead of the rest of the pack.
The drop in New Democracy’s poll numbers can be partially attributed to the fact that the conservative party found itself embroiled in a series of corruption scandals, the most recent of which, the farming funds scandal, prompted the intervention of the European prosecutorial office and the subsequent resignation of a high-ranking cabinet member and party officials, standing out.
