Inflation in Greece edged down to 2.9% in August from 3.1% in July, according to the Greek Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). Despite the slight slowdown, households continue to face steep price hikes in several essential goods and services.
Fruit prices climbed by 11.6%, chocolates surged by 23%, and meat rose 7.5%, while coffee became 18% more expensive. Housing costs also weighed heavily, with rents up 10.9% and health insurance premiums higher by 7%. In transport, airfares jumped 18.1%, and holiday packages rose 6.4%.
Some relief came from a sharp 33% drop in olive oil prices, alongside declines in fresh vegetables, pasta, potatoes, and certain fuels.
ELSTAT noted that the 2.9% increase in the Consumer Price Index compared with August 2024 reflects mixed movements across categories.
Food and non-alcoholic beverages rose 2.2% overall, driven by staples such as bread, dairy, meat, and frozen vegetables, partly offset by cheaper olive oil and fresh produce. Alcohol and tobacco rose 1.2%, while clothing and footwear posted a 7.7% rise.
Housing costs increased 3.7%, mainly due to higher rents, electricity, and home maintenance, though lower natural gas and heating oil prices provided some balance.
Health-related goods and services were up 0.6%, while transport costs rose 1.6% amid pricier new cars and air tickets, despite falling fuel prices.
Other notable increases included 1.7% in communications, 1.2% in leisure and cultural activities, and 2.6% in education. Hotels, cafés, and restaurants recorded a 6.2% rise, reflecting higher dining costs.
Overall, August data reveal a complex picture: headline inflation easing slightly, but households still burdened by double-digit increases in everyday essentials and services.
