Alter Ego Media Group, in cooperation with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA), and with the support of the European Parliament Liaison Office in Athens, is organizing the competition “News Challenge: Truth or Lie?”.
The competition is a continuation of the program “Disinformation or Real News? Learn How to Tell the Difference”, which is posted on the University’s free E-Learning programs platform. The latter program was created by the newspaper “To Vima”, in cooperation with the Mega Channel and the news site in.gr, with an aim to educate users, namely, news “consumers” capable of evaluating the validity of a news item and identifying fake news.
Contestants are asked to search for a news item that has been published/posted/broadcast as true but is false.
Participating contestants must then explain in a text – of up to 400 words – how they identified the specific fake news item, what made them single it out and why it is important for society that the disinformation was revealed in the particular case.
The aim of the competition is to encourage participants’ critical thinking skills and to cultivate cognizant news “consumers”, who can identify fake news, identify the news and information they can trust, but are also able to understand why a news item may constitute disinformation.
The grand winner of the Alter Ego Media competition will have the opportunity to choose between three prizes:
- a scholarship worth up to 3,000 euros for a postgraduate program of their choice at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (for the academic years 2026-2027 or 2027-2028).
- a scholarship worth up to 5,500 euros for attendance at the New Media Studies journalism school of the Training HUB educational hub (for the academic year 2026-2027),
- a training program of the University’s E-Learning platform (for the period 2026-2027 or 2027-2028)
Additionally, two runners-up will win an annual digital subscription to the newspaper To Vima or for the historical archive of the newspapers To Vima and Ta Nea.
