From Dec. 1, 2025, Greek consumers and businesses will experience a new era of seamless transactions as the IRIS instant payment system officially comes into effect. Retail stores, supermarket chains, and payment service providers are now required to align with the latest regulatory framework, finalized by AADE chief Giorgos Pitsilis.
The new rules connect cash register systems directly with the Tax Administration, ensuring that all payments—whether by card or IRIS—are immediately recorded and reported. For businesses, this integration means that instant payments are no longer a back-office process but a standard part of daily cash flow.
At the point of sale, shoppers will now see an additional option: immediate payment via their mobile phones using IRIS. Funds transfer directly from the customer’s bank account to the business’s account, streamlining transactions and speeding up the checkout experience.
AADE emphasizes that every payment, regardless of method, will trigger an official receipt, safeguarding transparency and providing real-time updates to the tax authorities.
For consumers, the change is straightforward: alongside cash and card options, IRIS offers a faster, contactless way to pay. By reducing waiting times at the register and simplifying money transfers, the system aims to make everyday purchases smoother and more convenient.
With IRIS, Greece steps into the future of retail payments, blending technology, efficiency, and fiscal transparency into every transaction.
