Greek Public Shows Deep Discontent in New Metron Analysis Poll

A new nationwide survey finds most Greeks dissatisfied with the government, the opposition, and the overall political landscape, with economic pressure and rising prices dominating public concerns.

Greek Public Shows Deep Discontent in New Metron Analysis Poll

AMetron Analysis poll presented Thursday shows that the Greek government continues to face widespread public discontent, despite a slight increase in support within its own voter base. The survey indicates that a majority of citizens oppose the government’s performance, with dissatisfaction driven primarily by inflation and other economic pressures.

Most Greeks Say the Country Is Moving in the Wrong Direction
According to the poll, 69% of respondents believe Greece is headed in the wrong direction, a figure consistent with previous surveys. Most people say their personal financial situation has either worsened or remained unchanged compared to last year, while only 15% report improvement.

The top concern for nearly half of respondents (49%) is rising prices, followed closely by broader economic challenges. Concerns about institutional trust also remain high, and more people now cite corruption as a key problem.

Government Scores Poorly Across Most Policy Areas
The government receives overwhelmingly negative ratings in nearly every sector. According to the survey:

79% give negative evaluations on economic management and prices.
73% rate performance on democracy and institutions poorly.
70% express dissatisfaction with issues affecting daily life and public safety.
Only in geopolitical matters does the government see improved assessments, with negative views dropping to 49% and positive views rising to 34%.

Overall, 71% of respondents say the government has performed poorly, while just 23% offer a positive evaluation. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also receives 70% negative and 26% positive personal ratings.

Opposition Also Viewed Negatively
Public frustration extends to the main opposition, which receives even worse marks: 81% negative and 11% positive. The performance of its leader, Nikos Androulakis, shows slight improvement but remains in negative territory.

Trump Viewed More Negatively Than Positively
The poll also measured Greek opinions of Donald Trump. Negative views continue to outweigh positive ones, though the mood is less hostile than in June. Only voters identifying as center-right or right show more favorable attitudes.

When asked about the state of Greek-American relations, 39% believe ties remain unchanged, 32% say they have weakened, and 26% think they have strengthened.

Shifts in Political Favorability
Among public figures, the President of the Hellenic Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas, continues to receive more negative (57%) than positive (27%) evaluations.
Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis, by contrast, receives broader approval than his party’s typical reach.

In political popularity, Zoi Konstantopoulou leads with 35%, followed by Dimitris Koutsoumbas at 33% and the prime minister at 30%. Smaller increases appear for Socrates Famellos and Nikos Androulakis.

“No One” Remains the Most Preferred Prime Minister
When asked who is most suitable to serve as prime minister, the leading answer is “No one” at 34%, reflecting a broader legitimacy crisis. Mitsotakis follows with 26%, while Alexis Tsipras receives 6%.

Party Support and Voting Intent
In declared voting intention, several parties—including the governing New Democracy, SYRIZA, PASOK, and Plefsi Eleftherias—show slight increases in voter cohesion. New Democracy remains the most consolidated party at 75%, though it faces losses to its right. SYRIZA continues to experience defections due to internal splits.

In Metron Analysis’s vote estimate, New Democracy rises slightly to 29.3%, still below the symbolic 30% threshold and far from any possibility of a parliamentary majority. SYRIZA reaches 6.1%, PASOK 13.5%, the Communist Party 7.5%, Greek Solution 10%, and Plefsi Eleftherias holds steady. Smaller parties such as MeRA25 and Voice of Logic show upward movement, while New Left remains far below the 3% threshold.

Public Split on Early Elections
Opinion is nearly evenly divided on whether Greece should hold early elections, with 50% supporting them and 49% wanting the government to complete its term.

Strong Appetite for Political Change
A clear 60% majority wants political change, compared to 39% who favor stability. This desire for a new direction cuts across most demographic groups and reflects a broader dissatisfaction with the current political system—not only with the government but also with the opposition’s ability to offer an alternative.

Potential New Parties Under Tsipras and Samaras
The poll examines hypothetical new parties led by former prime ministers:

A party led by Alexis Tsipras draws 23% potential support, including a “hard core” of 10%. Most potential voters come from SYRIZA, Plefsi Eleftherias, PASOK, and undecided respondents.
A party led by Antonis Samaras shows 16% potential support and a firm base of 5%, with voters mainly coming from New Democracy, Greek Solution, PASOK, and those who typically cast blank or invalid ballots.
Many Feel “Outside the Castle”
A majority of Greeks (52%) feel they are living “outside the walls”—a metaphor for exclusion from economic or social security. This sentiment is strongest among farmers, the working class, and small-business owners. Those who feel “inside the walls” tend to favor the governing party.

A Political Landscape in Transition
The findings suggest that New Democracy is supported mainly by those relatively satisfied with current conditions—now a minority. Meanwhile, the broader public, angered and dissatisfied, seeks political change that existing opposition parties have not yet managed to represent.

As a result, Greece appears to be entering a transitional political phase, with space emerging for new actors and potential realignments across both the left and the right.
