Greek Energy Minister on Fox: Greece Becomes Gateway for U.S. LNG

Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou put the spotlight squarely on Greece’s expanding strategic clout in global energy during an interview with Varney & Co. on Fox Business, underscoring how “from the Aegean to the Atlantic, energy is reshaping the geopolitical architecture — and Greece is the central pillar of this new design.”

Pressed by host Stuart Varney on whether Greece is poised to become Europe’s main entry point for U.S. LNG, Papastavrou was unequivocal. Greece, he said, is already positioned at the heart of this emerging energy map.

What Was Discussed in Washington

Papastavrou revealed that in his meeting with U.S. Interior Secretary and Chair of the American Energy Sovereignty Council Doug Burgum, the two sides examined detailed plans to fully wean Europe off Russian gas and replace it with American LNG.

“This transition is happening through Greece,” he emphasized, citing the country’s strong infrastructure — the Revithoussa terminal and the Alexandroupolis FSRU — its ideal geography at the crossroads of three continents, its robust economy, and its political stability. All of these factors, he said, make Greece “the gateway for American LNG into Central Europe.”

Asked whether supply contracts for U.S. LNG have already been signed, Papastavrou confirmed that American exporters have reached agreements with Greek companies — and added that “this LNG will make its way all the way to Ukraine.”

LNG for a War-Damaged Ukraine

The minister also noted that Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has suffered massive destruction due to Russian attacks. Recently, in a meeting held at Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s office in Athens, a trilateral agreement was signed between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Naftogaz, DEPA, and AKTOR.

The deal secures American LNG deliveries for February and March — about 0.3 billion cubic meters — to help support the Ukrainian population through the winter.

Papastavrou concluded by underscoring the presence and key role of U.S. Ambassador Mary Katherine Guilfoyle at the signing, describing her as instrumental in driving this broader energy realignment.
