Greek PM Visits Israel to Reinforce Strategic Alliance

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will pay an official visit to Israel on Monday, Dec. 22, where he is scheduled to meet with his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu. The visit takes place within the framework of the trilateral cooperation between Greece, Cyprus, and Israel.

According to government sources, Mitsotakis’ visit to Jerusalem is expected to reaffirm the strategic partnership between Greece and Israel, while further strengthening the trilateral axis of cooperation among Greece, Cyprus, and Israel. This cooperation spans key sectors including defense, security, energy, connectivity, civil protection, and innovation.

The timing of the visit is considered particularly significant, as the regional architecture of the Eastern Mediterranean is undergoing profound change.

In Jerusalem, the Greek prime minister will hold a private meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu. This will be followed by a trilateral meeting of the three leaders, with the participation of Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides. The high-level trilateral summit is expected to send a clear message of deepening cooperation and alignment on issues of mutual interest, as well as a shared commitment to regional stability and security.

Previous meetings within the trilateral framework were held at the level of foreign ministers in Athens last spring. More recently, the 3+1 format convened in Athens at the level of energy ministers.

Visit to Ramallah

The prime minister will also travel to Ramallah in the West Bank, where he will meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Government sources stress that Greece’s longstanding position remains focused on a political horizon for the Palestinian issue and the pursuit of a two-state solution. They also underline that Greece, as a credible and honest interlocutor with countries in the region, stands ready to contribute to the “day after” of the Gaza peace plan.

This contribution would take the form of humanitarian assistance, participation in reconstruction efforts, and consideration of Greece’s involvement in an International Stabilization Force.
