National Geographic Names 2025’s Top Destinations — Greece Makes the List

As 2025 draws to a close, National Geographic Travel is reminding travelers why the world continues to inspire awe. Through a series of eight videos and photo posts on Instagram, the iconic publication unveiled the destinations that captured the imagination of its global audience this year—places defined by striking natural beauty, cultural depth and timeless appeal.

“From stunning views at U.S. national parks to gorgeous architectural marvels, 2025 gave us countless places to fall head over heels in love with,” National Geographic wrote. “Let’s take a look at the destinations that topped your travel list and where they might lead us in 2026.”

The list spans the globe, featuring the otherworldly Rata forests of New Zealand with their intricate tree patterns, the geothermal wonders of Yellowstone with its geysers and hot springs, and the glacial lakes and vineyards of New York’s Finger Lakes. It also highlights the dramatic landscapes of China’s Li River, the peaks of Grand Teton, the rare Yosemite Firefall phenomenon, and Yellowstone’s winter transformation—offering a snapshot of destinations that resonated most with travelers this year.

Greece’s Timeless Presence

Among these global highlights, Greece stands out with a destination that is both classic and eternally captivating: the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion.

National Geographic chose to showcase the ancient monument under a full moon, a striking image that underscores its dramatic clifftop setting and enduring allure. Perched above the Aegean Sea, the temple continues to draw visitors not only for its historical significance but also for the unforgettable sunsets that have made Sounion one of Greece’s most iconic viewpoints.

The monument gained renewed visual impact in 2024 with the installation of a new lighting design, enhancing its architectural and archaeological presence after dark. The project was curated by internationally acclaimed lighting designer Eleftheria Deko, adding a contemporary layer to the site’s timeless beauty.
