Greece has called for a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Venezuela in line with the United Nations Charter and international law, during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. Greece is currently serving as a non-permanent member of the Council for the 2025–2026 term.
Addressing the session, Greece’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ioannis Stamatékos, said Athens is closely monitoring developments following the reported abduction and arrest of Venezuela’s president by the United States. He urged all parties involved to show maximum restraint and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions.
Stamatékos stressed the importance of fully respecting international law, human rights and the protection of civilians. He also acknowledged the challenges posed by transnational organized crime and drug trafficking, noting that such issues must be addressed through international cooperation and within established legal frameworks.
Greece reaffirmed that dialogue and diplomacy are the only viable paths toward a peaceful and lasting solution, aligning itself with the UN Secretary-General’s call for meaningful and inclusive dialogue in Venezuela.
At the same time, Greece reiterated that it does not recognize the legitimacy of Nicolás Maduro’s authority or the results of Venezuela’s July 28, 2024 elections, which it considers flawed. Athens emphasized its continued support for a negotiated, democratic transition that reflects the will of the Venezuelan people and said it remains ready to back any regional or international efforts aimed at resolving the crisis peacefully.
