Greece Expands Digital Registry to Events Sector

Greece’s tax authority is expanding its Digital Client Registry to include businesses operating in the events sector, bringing new reporting requirements for weddings, baptisms and other receptions.

Following its initial rollout to automotive-related businesses, the system will now apply to companies that provide event venues — such as halls and estates — as well as catering services. The expansion is scheduled to take place after Easter, as part of a broader plan to strengthen tax oversight and detect undeclared revenue and VAT evasion.

How the Digital Client Registry Works

The Digital Client Registry is an electronic database in which businesses are required to record customer details both before and after providing services. The data is automatically transmitted to the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), Greece’s tax authority, and cross-checked against issued receipts and invoices.

Under the new framework, event-related businesses will be required to submit client information immediately. Authorities will then be able to monitor declared guests and verify invoices, identifying potential cases of hidden transactions.

If an inspection finds that a client is present on business premises without having been registered in the system, the business faces fines and could be subject to a tax audit.

Daily Recording and Fines

Since last July, the Digital Client Registry has already been mandatory for car repair shops, body shops, car washes, parking facilities and vehicle rental companies. These businesses must record vehicle details daily via mobile phone or tablet and issue the corresponding receipt or invoice upon completion of the transaction.

For those sectors, a fine of €100 is imposed for each vehicle that is not recorded or is declared late. The collected data allows tax authorities to monitor customer flow and direct inspections to cases where discrepancies appear, through cross-checks with transaction data submitted to the myDATA platform.
