The donation of TERNA ENERGY to the Hellenic Armed Forces, which concerns the conversion of the airport of the 115th Combat Wing in Souda into a “green” installation, ie a of Zero Carbon Footprint installation (Net Zero Emissions Airport) with parallel coverage of all needs for electricity, heating and cooling by 100% from Renewable Energy Sources.
After completing the required procedures and obtaining the necessary approvals, works have begun on the airbase facilities. These are expected to be completed within 15 months. The annual benefit from the complete exemption of the Unit from the cost of electricity supply and coverage of heating needs will exceed 400,000 euros. It is worth noting that the military airport in Souda will be one of the first facilities in the world to receive the certification “Net Zero Energy Airport”.
What does the donation include?
TERNA ENERGY will fully cover the cost of plans, design and construction of all required projects.
Specifically, the proposal of TERNA ENERGY provides:
– The installation of electricity generation system from Renewable Energy Sources and specifically from photovoltaic units.
– The installation of energy storage system with lithium ion batteries
– “Intelligent” management and control system (Energy Management System) for the produced and consumed energy and the facilities of the unit, so that its management can balance in the most safe and efficient way all its energy needs
– Interventions and upgrades to already installed systems, such as replacement of existing heating boilers with heat pumps, installation of solar water heaters, supply of electric tricycles for professional use, replacement of iodine type lamps with new LED technology and their scope of application which will be determined through the energy audit of the plant facilities and the final energy study of the project
– Certification of the reduction of the Carbon Footprint of the Installation according to the Green House Gas Protocol (GHGP) and ISO 14064
– Certification of 115 Combat Wing as a Net Zero Energy Military Airport
Cooperation
For the implementation of the necessary projects, TERNA ENERGY will cooperate with the specialized company EASY POWER SA, which has designed, studied and manufactured autonomous / hybrid systems for the production and distribution of electricity, produced by the sun – for which it already has awarded a patent by OBI but also the formation of a technological platform that can ensure the certification of NET ZERO ENERGY, in existing or under construction building infrastructure or facilities.
Upon completion of the project, TERNA ENERGIAKI will undertake the training of the appropriate technical staff of the Air Force for the needs of operational operation, monitoring and maintenance of the entire system.
TERNA ENERGIAKI is the largest clean energy production and storage company in Greece and the largest Greek RES investor internationally. With more than 1,800 MW in operation, under construction or ready for construction in Greece and abroad, it continues to grow dynamically with the goal of 3 GW of RES facilities by 2025.
