Investigation begun after 68 elderly care home residents on Crete die within 15 months of same cause

Greek authorities have commenced an urgent investigation into an elderly care home in the Cretan isle city of Hania (Chania) after 68 residents died there within a span of 15 months, and with the cause of death in most fatalities cited by a sole physician as a heart attack.

The shocking figures comes amid reports of mistreatment of the elderly residents and patients with special needs by the staff, including the binding of the latter to their beds.

One recent and worrying case that stands out is the death of a 61-year-old suffering from mental illness but otherwise in good health.
