
The historic building of the National Theater of Rhodes and the place where the expansion and radical upgrade of the Rhodes Marina is planned were visited this morning by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The Prime Minister was briefed by the CEO of Marines Rhodes SA, Thomas Triantafyllou and General Manager Christoforos Harisis on the plans aimed at the expansion and holistic upgrade of the marina infrastructure, in order to become a hub for high tourism in the region. of the Eastern Mediterranean and a center of business activity.
“Since Rhodes is a pioneer, in any case, in the tourist product, I think it is the opportunity to get the marina it deserves. I am very enthusiastic about this project and I know that it has the full support of the relevant Ministries,” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis, while emphasizing the importance of all projects to be done in terms of sustainability.
The investment, which is expected to amount to at least 150m euros, envisages the expansion of the marina’s land and sea area, the widest expansion of its building facilities, the accommodation of about 250 companies – versus 17 currently operating – and the increase of mooring posts with the possibility of moorings for large boats and a seaside residential complex.
It is estimated that in the construction phase 500 to 800 people will be employed in the whole project. After the completion of the works, 1,200 to 1,500 people will work in the companies inside the marina, while the staff of Nea Marina will increase to almost 100 people, with 250 to 300 external partners.
The project will be a model in terms of the use of “green” solutions, with the construction of energy class A buildings, and in terms of digital management. In addition to the financial injection it will give to the city of Rhodes, rehabilitating a degraded area of the island, the investment will also contribute to traffic congestion, as an underground parking lot will be built with 1,000 spaces that will be accessible to all.
The Prime Minister was received at the marina by the Minister of Development and Investment Adonis Georgiadis, the Minister of Tourism Vassilis Kikilias, the Regional Governor of the South Aegean George Chatzimarkos, the Mayor of Rhodes Antonis Kampourakis and New Democracy MPs Manos Konsolas, Vassilis Ypsilantis, Mika Iatridi and Giannis Pappas
After the presentation, the Prime Minister sat down to drink coffee with young people. During the discussion, two girls gave him some samples of slabs made from recycled plastic materials, which can be used in construction, and Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke to them about youth entrepreneurship programs.

Earlier, Mr. Mitsotakis visited the Theater, which is a landmark for the island but has suffered serious damage over time, was guided to the facilities and was informed by the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni about the progress of studies for the restoration of. The Prime Minister was welcomed at the site by the Regional Governor of the South Aegean, George Chatzimarkos, and the Mayor of Rhodes, Antonis Kampourakis.
“It is my commitment, Mr. Regional Governor, Mr. Mayor, that this project will be completed, the first part will be financed – as we said – from national resources and then the equipment [will be financed] from NSRF programs. We will cooperate, as we always do, with the Region and the Municipality with absolute speed and efficiency. Everyone will do their job and I hope that the work will start very soon, so that this space of culture is rendered, state-of-the-art, back to the society not only of Rhodes, of all the Dodecanese”, said Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
“When this theater is completed, it will upgrade Rhodes as a whole, I believe it will also help it to become a visitable pole for twelve months a year”, added the Prime Minister, while expressing his absolute satisfaction for the good cooperation with the Local Government first and second degree in the South Aegean and Rhodes.
The main goal of the planned interventions is the restoration of the Theater, which was built in 1936-37, in a way that will preserve as much as possible its original form and utilizing the original construction materials.
At the same time, the historic Theater will be modernized with the necessary technological and functional infrastructure to be rendered to the local community, which it will serve as a cultural center that will be open to the public, regardless of performances.
“We envision a truly state-of-the-art multi-space that will now utilize the latest technology and I think it will also help in the production of culture from a place that is also famous and has been identified with culture. Therefore, a legacy for the new generation which will be able to find in this area an important cultural way out “, noted Mr. Mitsotakis.
