The last trip for Karolos Papoulias to his native land, the Island of Lake Ioannina, the place he loved and became his refuge and sanctuary, took place on Thursday at noon, in a close family circle and few friends of this great man, of the strict coronavirus protocol.
His body arrived by road from Athens to Ioannina and was transported with applause, in an emotional atmosphere, by boat to the Island.
His friends, close associates and the islanders welcomed his body at the Holy Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, where a trisagion was performed by the Metropolitan of Ioannina Maximos.
A special presence was the presence of an elderly resident, who was waiting for the coffin of the former President of the Republic outside the Cemetery, with a bouquet of flowers and a handwritten note with which “the city was saying goodbye to its son”.
The former President of the Republic was honored by the presence of the governor of Epirus, Alexandros Kachrimanis and the mayor of Ioannina, Moses Elisaf.
