Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with representatives of pensioners’ associations at his Maximos Mansion on Friday.
Citing a report by the country’s unified social insurance fund, Mitsotakis said almost 95 percent (or 2.47 million beneficiaries) of the country’s total of number of pensioners – out of a total population of roughly 11 million – will see increases in monthly benefits, beginning from January 2023.
Mitsotakis said more than 840,000 pensioners will benefit from the abolition of a so-called “solidarity tax” imposed by the previous leftist government, while 1.2 million pensioners will receive a 250-euro lump sum bonus.
Representatives of the groups again called for social security hikes, as well as the retroactive payment of so-called 13th and 14th monthly payments allocated during holiday months before the first bailout in 2010.
