Erietta Latsis-Tsoukala, the widow of Greek shipping tycoon Yiannis Latsis, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 97. Yiannis Latsis died in 2003 at the age of 93.

Erietta Latsis was born in 1925 in the small southwest Greece city of Pyrgos, in the Peloponnese.

At the age of 16 she eloped with merchant seaman Yiannis Latsis shortly before Greece entered WWII on the side of the Allies in 1940.

Together the couple had three children: Spiros, Margarita and Marianna.

Erietta was viewed as solid foundation of support behind the ambitious Yiannis Latsis, as he built a business empire in shipping, banking and refining, among others. The couple was also major donors to charity.
