Greece is among the three EU countries with the oldest, on average, populations, according to Eurostat figures for 2022, with the average age of a resident in the country being 46.1.

The increase in the average age of residents in the country is the third highest in the EU, at +4.1 years (tied with Slovakia), with Portugal at the top with +4,7 years, followed by Spain, 4.3 years.

Greece is in the fourth highest place in terms of citizens above the age of 65 in comparison with people between the ages of 65 and 15.

EU-wide the average age is 44.4 years, up by 0.3 years from 2021
