Greek transport minister resigns in wake of deadly train collision

Greek transport and infrastructure minister Costas Karamanlis on announced his resignation on Wednesday afternoon, hours after a late-night train collision in north-central Greece resulted in at least 36 deaths, mostly young adults.

“When something so tragic occurs, it is not possible to continue as if nothing has happened. I’m in politics for only a few years, but I consider that a necessary element of our democracy is for our citizens to trust the political system. This is called political responsibility,” he said.

Karamanlis is a name-sake and first cousin of former Greek PM Costas Karamanlis.
