Tax revenues collected by the Greek state surpassed targets by 1.3 billion euros in the first two months of 2023, according to provisional state budget execution figures – on a modified cash basis – released on Thursday.
One reason for the increase, however, was a deferred payment deadline for annual road fees imposed on all vehicles, a figure worth 470 million euros. Usually, such road fees must be paid by the last day of the year.
According to Alternate Finance Minister Theodoros Skylakakis, a continuing good performance of tax revenue collection enhanced the Greek economy’s resilience and confirmed a very strong growth potential.
The state budget recorded a surplus of 2.294 billion euros in the January-February 2023 period, up from a budget target of a surplus of 36 million euros and a deficit of 910 million euros over the same period last year. The primary result showed a surplus of 4.201 billion euros, up from a target of a primary surplus of 1.816 billion euros and a primary surplus of 840 million euros in the corresponding period in 2022.
