
Greek wine production fell significantly in 2022, according to a report by the Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin (ΟΙV), with the output reaching 2.1 mhl, compared to 2.5 mhl the previous year, a drop by 14 percent.
The result is the lowest in decades.
In terms of production volume, Greece ranks 19th worldwide in the “Top 20” of wine-producing countries.
The global production for 2021 is estimated to have reached 258 mhl, down marginally (1 percent) from 2021. Conversely, wine production in the European Union increased by 4 percent (161.1 mhl).
Although production in Greece fell, based on figures provided by OENsights, a specialized platform, the country was the leader in terms of growth of wine exports to Europe – up by 16.8 percent in value, or 99 million euros, and 6.6 percent of volume.
According to the Greek statistics authority (EL.STAT), the value of Greek wine exports in 2021 reached 84.7 million euros, comprising 11.3 percent of the total national production.
