The highest price ever fetched for a painting by noted 20th century painter Yannis Tsarouhis (1910-1989) came on Thursday, during an auction by Vergos in Athens, with his “Mais” (May) work sold for more than 475,000 euros.
The lowest asking price for the painting was 200,000 euros.
The modernist painting depicts a youthful angel representing the month of May, and is inspired by the Louis Philippe style of decorations.
The auction, focusing on the theme of “Modern Greek Painting and Sculpture”, witnessed some 85 percent of the works plucked up by art buyers, with the organizers reporting a sales turnover exceeding two million euros.
