Greece is setting its sights on India’s thriving Bollywood film industry, aiming to lure film productions to Greek soil. The strategy involves the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the two countries, promising beneficial rewards for both sides.
“We’re initiating communication with Indian producers to explore collaboration opportunities for mutual benefit,” notes Deputy Minister of Culture Christos Dimas.
While specifics regarding Indian interests are yet to be defined, Dimas highlights Greece’s natural beauty and diverse landscapes as appealing options for filmmakers.
One of the key incentives is the 40% tax return on basic production expenses, a stimulus regarded as the most attractive across Europe. This financial boost is expected to significantly influence the choice of filming location.
Despite lacking Hollywood-scale studios, Greece boasts facilities capable of handling smaller-scale projects. Similar initiatives with countries like China indicate the government’s belief in Greece’s potential as a focal point in the film industry.
The ‘Cash Rebate Program,’ launched in 2018, aims to attract foreign audiovisual productions while supporting domestic ones. Collaborations span across America, Canada, Australia, China, Korea, European nations, and the Balkans.
Filming occurs in over 200 locations across Greece, including the greater Athens region, Peloponnese, Epirus, Ionian islands, Crete, Mykonos, Halkidiki, Dodecanese islands, Monemvasia, Nafplio, and numerous Cycladic islands.
