Despite now frigid relations on the political front, Russian natural gas imports to Greece are apparently skyrocketing, with the Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator (DESFA) on Wednesday reporting a 30.91%-increase in consumption in the first quarter of 2024, compared to the corresponding period of 2023.

Russian state natgas exporter Gazprom dominated imports to Greece, mostly through the overland pipeline entering the latter country through the Sidirokastro border crossing, but also via the Revithoussa LNG terminal off the port of Piraeus.

Specifically, the quantity of Russian gas imported from the overland pipeline in the January-March 2024 period reached 7.25TWh, a figure that corresponds to 43.8% of total natural gas imports.

Even more impressive is the fact that Russian gas imports through the Sidirokastro border crossing were up by 113.86% compared to the first quarter of 2023.

LNG imports from Russia in 1Q 2024, via Revithoussa, reached 1.91 TWh, up by 81.9% compared to the first quarter of 2023.
