Greek Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis Meets with U.S. Treasury Secretary Amid IMF-World Bank Meeting

Greece’s Finance Minister, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, held a high-level meeting on Friday, April 25, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Deputy U.S. Treasury Secretary Michael Faulkender, during his visit to Washington for the IMF-World Bank meeting.

The conversation focused on deepening economic cooperation between the United States and Greece, attracting American investment in Greece’s growing innovation sectors, and exploring avenues of collaboration on artificial intelligence.

The meeting came during one of the most competitive weeks on Washington’s international finance calendar, with Bessent emerging as one of the most sought-after figures. Finance ministers from around the world were vying for face time with U.S. Treasury officials, hoping to capitalize on a temporary suspension of tariffs that has opened a narrow window to renegotiate trade terms.

Out of 191 financial delegations attending the IMF meetings, only 13 secured meetings with the U.S. Treasury—and Greece was among them. For Athens, the engagement also reflects a broader warming of ties with Washington, underscored by the recent nomination of Kimberly Guilfoyle as U.S. ambassador to Greece.

Although her confirmation is still pending, the selection of a figure closely aligned with President Donald Trump’s inner circle is already opening doors for Athens in Washington. Direct proximity to the president is considered a key asset in the Trump 2.0 administration, and Guilfoyle’s nomination is seen as a signal of Greece’s growing relevance within Trump’s Washington — particularly in diplomatic and economic circles.

Greece is currently monitoring the ongoing tariff negotiations at the European level before deciding whether to pursue specific waivers for Greek exports to the U.S.

The Pierrakakis-Bessent meeting also came on the heels of remarks by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Breitbart News on the subject of transatlantic trade. His comments were welcomed in Washington as constructive and supportive of a more flexible European stance.
