Greek Banks Begin Phasing Out Physical Cards for ATM Withdrawals

Asignificant shift is underway in the way customers access their cash in Greece, as banks gradually phase out the use of physical cards for ATM withdrawals. The transition marks a move toward a more digital and streamlined banking experience, allowing customers to withdraw money using only their smartphones.

Cardless Cash Withdrawals on the Rise

Several Greek banks have already begun upgrading their ATM networks to support this new technology. Instead of inserting a debit or credit card into the machine, users will now be able to complete transactions simply by tapping their smartphone on the ATM.

This innovation is powered by digital wallets, such as Apple Pay and Google Wallet. Customers must first add their card details to their phone’s digital wallet. Once set up, they can use the device to access cash, check their account balance, or even make payments and transfers directly from the ATM.

How It Works:

• Tap your smartphone on the ATM (equipped with NFC technology).
• Verify your identity using Face ID, fingerprint, or a secure passcode.
• Choose the amount you want to withdraw and complete the transaction.
• You can also check your account balance or perform other banking transactions, such as transfers or bill payments.

Already Available at Three Major Banks

Currently, three Greek banks have rolled out ATMs that support this feature, with more expected to follow as the demand for contactless services continues to grow. The initiative aligns with global trends in digital banking and contactless transactions, offering increased convenience and security for users.
