The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) has reached a historic milestone by earning recognition in three major international rankings for the 2024–2025 academic year. Following the release of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2025, NKUA now ranks among the world’s top universities, including a spot in the global Top 100 in two key categories.
Adding to its accolades, the university has also been named “Most Improved University in Europe” by the QS Rankings—an honor that highlights its growing international presence and academic prestige.
Outstanding Rankings Based on Social and Global Impact
On June 18, 2025, the results of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings were announced. These rankings evaluate universities based on their social and economic contributions as aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.
NKUA excelled in three SDG categories:
• 53rd globally for Gender Equality (SDG 5)
• 64th globally for Quality Education (SDG 4)
• 65th globally for Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10)
It also holds the top position among universities in Greece and Cyprus. Notably, these honors reflect NKUA’s real-world efforts in sustainability, gender equality, and social responsibility, rather than bibliometric data or reputation surveys.
NKUA has also earned 85th place worldwide in the Top Universities by Google Scholar Citations—a testament to the university’s emphasis on research excellence, open access to academic knowledge, and global collaboration.
Remarkable Leap in Research Rankings
In the AD Scientific Index, NKUA climbed 30 positions to reach 63rd place globally out of 24,317 institutions. It ranks first in Greece and Cyprus and 15th in Europe, with a total of 2,279 registered researchers. Of these, 155 are in the top 3%, 578 in the top 10%, and 1,256 in the top 30% of researchers worldwide based on metrics like the h-index and i10-index.
