Melania Trump’s Letter to Putin on the Children of Ukraine

The wife of the U.S. president, Melania Trump, raised the issue of the dire situation facing children affected by the war in Ukraine in a personal letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to two White House officials, Donald Trump himself handed over the letter during his talks with the Russian leader in Alaska.

Melania Trump, who is of Slovenian origin and did not take part in the trip, made no public statement. U.S. officials did not disclose the exact content of the letter, but said it referred specifically to the abductions of children from Ukraine to Russia. The existence of the letter had not been known until today.

The issue of children is among the most sensitive aspects of the Ukrainian crisis. Kyiv has denounced the forced transfers of tens of thousands of children to Russian territory or areas under Russian occupation as a “war crime” that meets the definition of genocide under the United Nations Convention.

Moscow, for its part, argues that it transferred the children “to protect them from a war zone.” However, the United Nations Human Rights Office has pointed out that millions of Ukrainian children have suffered serious violations of their rights since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022.
