Greece will begin paying backdated pension amounts to tens of thousands of retirees on Monday, August 25, 2025, according to the country’s national social security agency (e-EFKA).
The payments concern 47,055 retired military beneficiaries of the Army, Navy, and Air Force funds, covering the period between January 1, 2021, and March 31, 2023. These amounts are being distributed following the completion of the official clearance process, as outlined under Article 34 of Law 5018/2023.
In addition, the review process identified 7,318 cases of retirees who had already received back payments and require rechecking, as well as 17,419 cases where no additional amounts are due.
The agency stressed that it remains committed to the timely and accurate payment of pensions and retroactive sums to eligible recipients.
Tax declaration process
The back payments must also be declared for tax purposes. The process is fully digital: retirees must log into the myAADE online platform, select the relevant tax years for which they received retroactive amounts, and submit an amended tax return.
Once submitted, the tax authority issues a new settlement notice specifying the exact amount of tax owed. This amount must be paid in full by the end of January 2026.
